Lecture on Listening

FOUR STEP LISTENING PROCESS
1. Sensing- sight, sound
2. Attending- choosing what to pay attention to
3. Understanding- making sense of what you chose to pay attention to
4. Remembering- retaining the information

PROBLEMS
1. Sensing
-As you get older your hearing and sight gets worse
2. Attending
-We only attend to a fraction of the info coming in from our senses
-We fake paying attention
-We listen to what relates to us
-We have a hard time paying attention to a nonenthusiastic speaker
3. Understanding
-When we disagree/can't see where the speaker is coming from its hard to understand them
-Having no background knowledge of the subject
-Unknown vocab, or having a different meaning for the word than the speaker
-Tune out speaker because of personal beliefs
4. Remembering
-We losse info very quickly

TIPS FOR GOOD LISTENING
1. Sensing
-Sit in a good spot in the room so that you can hear and see well
2. Attendence
-Good night sleep and eat good, so you will have the energy to pay attention
-Try to relate the subject to you
-Give facial feedback, in making yourself give feedback you will also have to pay attention
-Give them a chance, a bit of your time
3. Understanding
-Try to predict where the speaker is going and then compare your prediction to the speech results
-Give facial feedback to tell the speaker if you are or aren't understanding what they are saying

ill get the rest to everyone later
hope it helps
